Joburg's inner city Gallery
The 13th Floor is a gallery operating from various ( pop up ) venues in the Jozi inner city. Currently we have been running a gallery space on 95 Commissioner Street. We have organised shows and dinner events in a 13th Floor apartment in the famous art deco high rise the Ansteys Building on Joubert Street. We have a studio in the beautiful Corner House on Commissioner Street. We are working with the Johannesburg Central Library and with Urban Ocean Property Developers. We organise workshops for children and auctions on rooftops. We love the inner city and have no intention of leaving it any time soon. Our past exhibitions featured: Mbali Tshabalala, Cassius Khumalo, Thabo Motseki, Gordon Froud, Andile Buka, Alex Voslo, Grace Mokalapa, Keneilwe Mokoena, Robyn Field, Noko Mello, Mongezi Ncaphayi, Layziehound, Azael Langa, Matthews Tshuma, Goodlord Shoyisa, Ntsika Dulwana, James Shield, Mongezi Ncombo, Fleur de Bondt, Mathijs Lieshout and more. We'd be happy to see you on our events!
A photo project by a Mozambican female young photographer.
The photographs revive the 90s through the use of fashion trends and vibes of the time using young Mozambican creative people born and/or raised in the 90s (“the born-free”), knowing that Mozambique was coming out of civil war and opening up to the world at the time.
The photographs were taken in different bairros/urban landmarks of Maputo to recreate the sense of street community that was prominent at the time.
The exhibition is also very collaborative, from working with a filmmaker to create a documentary, artists to create a line of products inspired by the 90s and writers that participate in shaping the magazine.
The Project is a mixed media concept including: a photographic exhibition with a timeline of the 90s and merchandise such as
stickers, postcards, T-shirts, a tote bag and a book. A
documentary will also be screened.
Exhibition Location: The Anstey's Studios are in one of the most famous Art Deco buildings in Johannesburg. Construction of the 20 storeys high building began in 1935 and it was completed in 1937. The building has evolved over the years. It was initially a high-end department store. Ansteys has such rich history.
